The 1998 FLHTUI seems to loose its cold/hot idle settings about once or twice a year for some reason. I would always go through the instructions to getting it set right and then it was good to go until next time.
When it was cold and I would first start it, the idle would be between 700-800. After it was fully warmed up, the idle would be 900-950. I went to setting the cold/hot idle and now....
I first start it when cold and the idle now races at 1300. It stays high until fully warmed up. Once warmed up, it will idle at 1000 which is just about perfect. However, if I shut the bike off for more than a minute, then start the bike, the idle goes back to 1300. After about three-four minutes, the idle returns to 1000.
I do not understand why it takes so long for it to settle to 1000. I am not having a check engine light and the throttle body is clean. Any ideas....
Vacum leak, leaky injector, head temperature sensor....???
I noticed my idle seemed off when I got it back from the dealer when I had him check out the cam tensioner two months ago. I had heard wear could create a problem. After I got it home and went to start it I noticed the idle was smooth but at a lot lower RPM. Just running. It has gotten a little better but still seems to idle lower than before I took it in. While having at the dealer I had a front tire installed and swapped to synthetic also . The bike only had 15000 miles on it. I have put about 1500 more and it still seems to idle smoother and at a lower RPM. I haven't found an answer yet either.
