Default starter doesn't always engage?

Every now and then, my starter just spins. Is that common? (88 FXRS 22K mi) It always gets over it and starts right up. Just seems odd and I want to know if it's something starting to show it's self.

At least yours just spins. My 98 FLHTC on occasion will produce the most god-awful grinding sound, release the button, try again, and it will start right up like nothing is wrong. I wish I had the answer for you but I don't.

Sounds like the starter drive gear unit is going out.

If it were my bike, I would remove the outer primary cover and have a look at the starter pinion and ring gears. If everything looks good, check all the electrical connections, make sure they are clean and secure.
