i went back to harley and the guy there looked up the parts i bought and they were all correct my cases are 85 model and my flywheels are 91-92
this crank has the t keyway like the 93-99 but the pinion shaft has no spacer and the face is flat my pinion shaft needs a spacer ( why in the world they would design it like that is beyond me) and the face is recessed for the nut i cleaned the threads with cleaner and locktite the thread but i tourqed the nut in three stages 10 lbs 20 lbs and then 42 lbs , i was very carefull not to touch the threads with my hand so the locktite would work correctly thought this time it would hold it didnt last ,oh when the boke does run its very smooth with hardly and vibration
i would love to see someone else 91-92 cam gear and see if they look like mine?
make sure it doesnt have a hairline crack thru the threads allowing it to loose torque .I have seen some that were staked on with a punch to keep them from backing off a bunch
we pulled a 92 apart and it looks identical to mine ! im at the point where i might buy a compete S&S lower end and put my cylinders and heads on ,my mate wants to tig the nut on lol , its getting cold now so after i get home from going back to Australia to see family im gonna either pull the engine and put in a set of flywheels from a 84-90 with the tappered shaft , replace the short block with a S&S or rebuild another engine ! missed out on alot of riding this year!
Wouldn't be possible to mix the 3 different generation up , the first has the larger tapered shaft like on the shovel that ends in 89 that uses the 2 semi circle keys ,the second generation has the smaller pinion non tapered shaft that uses a single t key this what i have mine bike has the early cases but the later assembly , the third is similar to the 2nd but the pinion shaft is 1/4 longer and has a corse thread the reason its long it to acommadate the pinion shaft which i think is longer thats also the reason the 93- on nose cones are different !
I thought the 93 nose cones were different for the reason of the way the earlier bikes were bottom breathers and the newer switched to top breather. Here is a link to pinion gears. with a description it may help.

You can see that the 91-92 gear is receseed and not flat. Im guessing it has left ahnd threads too but im not sure. The flat faced pinion shaft uses a worm gear with a spacer as one piece.
I am having a similiar problem where I put 93 flywheels in 90 cases. I keep breaking the keyway in it. I ordered the correct gears for that year pinion and hope it works. Unfortunatley I have to wait 7 more days for the parts to come in before I know wether it will work or not.

yours has the spacer built into the pinion gear ! does your nut come loose too ? my pinion gear and cam gear are a matching green dot pair, mine shears the key every time im thinking the 84-89 design with the 2 keys is better way to go !!! im thinking about pulling it apart this weekend and using the green locktite !!!
