88 EVO starter clutch replacement, EZ fix
I drained the oil from the side cover and removed it. I bumped the starter, the bendix came out, engaged, and sat there while the starter motor ran.
Next, I unhooked the battery.
At the starter solonoid, I depressed the little spring and cap, removed a tiny pin, and then removed the spring and cap the pin held. This frees up one end of the wish bone.
Next I removed the large allen headed screw on top of the motor beside the case edge. This let me slide the large pin up and out, freeing the wish bone for removal.
I then slid the bendix out till it engaged the fly wheel and held it with vicegrips ( on the smooth part) while I unscrewed the nut on the end. (sholdered nut with 2 flat sides) NOTE, this is REVERSE THREADS
Now it just slids off into your hand. There is a pully looking thing on the unit held on by a snap ring. This is for the forks on the wish bone and my new unit didn't have it so I transfered it over.
I put everything back in reverse order and it fixed my problem.
All together, I had about 1 1/2 hrs and a little over $80 in my fix. Hope this will help somebody else. It is an easy fix.
