having problems with my battery post lately but decided to take a ride this afternoon and all of a sudden the head light went out, the signals stopped a little later, then when the horn was pressed the motor skipped. 2 miles later popes and backfires ended with me on the side of the road. Brought the bike back and went through every wire on the bike. THE NEGATIVE BATTERY POST WAS CORRUPTED AND THE CONNECTION WAS BAD.. Did not see it on the side of the road when I called by pod to pick me up. Always look at the simple stuff first. Every one I called said no telling. KEEP IT SIMPLE
You say you have been " having trouble with your battery post lately " ... ?
Does this mean you have tried to solve this problem before or did it have to finally die on the road because of a battery post connector that was so corroded it lost conductivity ?
Im wondering how the bike could even start with a connector that bad ?
As Spanners39 says ... owner-induced troubles result in owner-induced expensive headaches.
Its time to open your manual Pinetop and do some maintenance on the ole girl so she can keep you in the wind .
Yea, either those felt washers or spray on protectent goes on every battery on every vehicle I own. I even spray the starter connections. All else gets dialectric grease, and I mean every bulb socket, ring terminal on anything. Saves a lot of headaches. jmho. Bikes are more prone to the environment than cars, ie: less protected.
No corrosion involved. When I picked up the bike the neg battery terminal had struck the frame above it and had melted the lead creating a small puddle the size of the top of pencil eraser. I used an oversized insert for the bolt to attach to and put a slice of thick rubber on top to avoid the problem again. In 5 months the problem occurred two or three times wherein the bike would cut off when trying to start but would bounce right back and start. I knew there was a problem but funds are tight and I wanted all I could get out of the battery. The post was to remind all that the first place to look is at the beginning of the chain, lets say the private (E_1) of the unit before going upstairs to more complicated issues. New battery on yesterday and she is fine. And yes I have a manual and have conducted all and more of the suggested items but not rich enough to replace just in case. The only part of the bike that has not seen my fingers and eyes is the inner primary and that is coming when I change this belt. Of course I have the manual memorized on this procedure. Thanks again Spanners 39.
