Anybody here switched their FXR forks to use FXDX or XL1200S adjustable forks? Is it worth the swap, or should I stick with originals and re-spring with Gold Valves? Thanks

Yes, it's worth it, real cartridge forks will spank emulators such as gold valves
Gold valves are designed to 'emulate' cartridge forks, but as Gigawitz says they ain't no substitute! I had an FXDXT and haven't ridden a Harley with better suspension. I have gold valves in my Sporty and really can't feel any benefit from them, so given your choice I would look for a set of FXDX forks!
The only query I have is are FXR forks the same diameter as FXDX ones? Or would you need to swap the trees as well?
I'll agree that cartridge forks are great - they are a bit pricey. For HDs that aren't ever going to carve corners like a 'Busa - I've found that good, progressive rate springs front/back make a huge difference.
I like the works performance dual-rate progressive fork springs up front, (about $150) and the progressive 412s out back.
