hand control upgrade question
I have a 95 softail, and wanted to upgrade to the 96+ controls. My question is what is the difference between the wiring? I know I will have to change the pins to 95 for the stock connector. I have the wiring schematic for 95 but not for 96+. Has anyone done this, and if so do can you lead me in the right direction wiring wise? Much appreciated.
I did it on my 84. Most of the colors matched up except for the power wires going to the switches...the older ones used separate power wires and the newer ones used a common power wire so there was a few less wires. If you put both wiring schematics side by side it is easy to see what goes where...google will help you find the one you don't have.
I did it on my '89 Ultra. But I didn't just change them. I changed the front brake reservoir to work with the newer switch assembly. I also changed the clutch lever mount to match the brake.
First, I bought the Service manual for both '97 and '98. I compared the wiring diagrams. The '97 and '98 were the same. Then I just matched the wiring. The only difference I found was the Ultra switches. The Turn signal, horn, starter, Kill, and High Beam were the same. Just make sure the switches are not from the 2010 or newer models. They now use a Buss line and combine switch functions on single wires. Just try to stay near to the 2000 or earlier model year to make sure there are no problems with the switches.
