It sounds like someone was messing with it before it went into the barn. Could be a timing issue, or the thing that was hanging up traildog, and I don't think that issue was ever actually identified. Mess with it long enough, it will run. You said you wrench on everything else in the world, this is simple next to that stuff.
i beg to differ when it comes to diesels. however i did get it to run. i googled basic setups for the S&S and set her back to stock. my accelerator pump setting was almost all the way out. that most likely explains the fuel spitting out the front. now the only reason i can see someone doing that was that huge vacuum leak given by the bad intake gaskets. it seems as though i have my hands full. oh and i fried another starter relay. stupid autozone relays. anyway im waiting for the battery to charge so ill go get my pups some food and give this another shot in a bit.

ok i got it to idle on its own. now what adjustment would cause it to backfire at idle and loudly pop from the exhaust?
yes they had the relay i needed and it was 5 bucks. harley wanted 1 arm and 1.5 legs for the same thing. ok so it was 30 bucks. but i did not remotely feel like paying that much just incase it wasnt the relay.

Have you ever heard the saying " You get what you pay for"?
40 amp and now this thing is acting hard to start and when i let off the start switch the solenoid wont turn off. its almost like its got a dead battery and wont turn over anymore.

I got my 40 amp at Napa and haven't had any problems with it.
It cost about $15.
Did you check your voltage on your battery? Yes I know it is new but you have been trying to start your bike for a while now.
