Check the solenoid is connected properly, I had an Ironhead do this and it was the solenoid wired in wrong.

You adjust your timing with the ignition pick up in the cam chest.
On the right side of the motor you will see a round plate about 3' in diameter held on by 2 bolts. Take those 2 bolts out and you will see the ignition pick up.

Do you have a manual for that bike? If you don't I would advise getting one as they are very helpful.

ok i got it to idle and rev but it keeps backfiring out the exhaust. even at idle.

whats the timing supposed to be and how do you adjust it?

ah yes old points and condenser. what is the factory gap on the points?

Between 15 - 18 thousandths.

is that when its closed?

there is a hex head that rotates that opens and closes the points. right now its closed and there is 0 gap.

Turning the backplate clockwise will advance the timing, retards the other way.
You can fiddle with it to see if it improves or you may still have a manifold leak.

Gap is when open, hex head is the advance unit, don't rotate the motor using it or you will snap off the bolt. Rotate motor on kickstart if fitted or with the rear wheel. I usually mark the back plate, remove the screws and rotate the plate until the points open, adjust and then put back at the mark i made.
