I just think this lady has been taken advantage of and is now in a bad spot, legally speaking. I wish her luck.

Maybe the modification was cutting the numbers off and welding in a new piece!

I have modified lots of frames and the one thing you leave is the numbed on the neck (should be on the left side, I have seen older ones on the right) this is so the bike still remains a "stock" HD for licen. and insurance. The motor as stated previously should be stamped just below the jugs. All Harley Vins start with HD1 on the frame at least everyone I have ever seen. I had a build that was heavily modified and there was body filler covering the number on the neck but the case had the original Harley vin, never had any problems with it. When we buy a used vehicle here we have to get a package that gives the owner history, liens, title condition etc. you might be able to run the vin through the hd website there is a section where you can register your bike and when you put the number in it will tell you the model and for some a history.
Good luck

Exactly Kushman. If no numbers on the neck or at the base of the cylinders, something is not on the up and up with this bike.

Sherrie, this is a long shot, but you might look at the left side of the engine, at the bottom, and make sure you don't have a chrome piece bolted on that is blocking your view of the VIN number. It's a long shot, but my bike has it and the VIN is behind it, out of view. At the base of the cylinders, top of the crankcase.

Sherrie: I would open the pdf file get the correct date of the engine, and serial number off the block. Then call S&S and trace the engine forward. See if you can develop a history for at least the engine, if not the frame. Sounds like you might have a Katrina bike.

In which case you will end up with a insurance auction sale.

I believe their was a nation wide law passed sometime in the 90's that now require for the engine and frame numbers to match, if not, the bike is confiscated. Prior to the 80's the engine number was all that was required. My '73 sporty only had as engine number.

There was a lot of grief over this at one of the Daytona bike weeks a few years ago. That is when the manufactures of after market frames and engines started developing the mso sheets.

Good luck. Hate to say this, but I don't think Ms. DMV will be kind or intelligent about this. Feel free to PM me.

It is leagal to build your own frame and engine, I think you will need to have the title VIN put on the engine and the frame.

I think her biggest problem is going to be the paper title comes back to a 1998 MG. Unless someone just mistyped a letter.

They actually start with 1HD.

It's a state by state issue. Texas completely disregards engine numbers.
