How is this bike insured? My insurance requires a vin number. If I had a wreck and the vehicle I crashed didn't have the right numbers I am sure I would have no insurance coverage. Bad situation with mismatched numbers many different ways.

 

Best scenario...New homebuilt title after inspection. ( MSO's would be a nice thing right about now.)

Worst case.... stolen parts and impounded

Mississippi seems a little more lax on these things, but when I lived in Florida (Pinellas county/St. Pete.) if you stopped at a DL checkpoint, especially late at night, and there was a question about the numbers on your bike, the Pinellas county sheriffs office didn't play. They would call a wrecker and have it towed until you could prove ownership. I knew a guy in the mid 80's down there that this happened to. He spent over 3 grand in legal fees trying to recover his bike from the sheriff's department. Never did. I hope DMV can give this lady a straight forward answer to all of this, but from reading her post, it doesn't sound like it's going to be an easy solution.

 

In the state of Ms if I am stopped on this bike it would be conficated as contrand. I 'm not sure but they would probably press all kind of charges on me too.

Did you ever get a bill of sale from the guy you bought it from?

 

I paid $4500.00 & have another $500.00 in it. I had to have the speeedometer cable fixed & I had a new front tire put on the front, & got new brakes.

 

Might just go to DMV (leave the bike at home), and ask some questions. I'd be vague. Don't give 'em too much info yet. If you get the right person at DMV, they may make it simple to correct all of this. After all, it just depends on what's typed on a piece of paper.

 

Let's just hope the DMV says "OK, no problem, we'll just do this and that".

 

My bike is a HD 1999 Heritage Softail Classic 1200cc EVO. The frame has been modified along with the engine a S&S Super Stock, & it has a high performace carb. I now really think that part of the modify was to remove the vin. When I went to buy the bike I took 2 men with me. Neither one of them had my back. The guy I bought the bike from had owned it for 10 years. I talked to him again & he has to many stories about the vin not being on the frame. He has no paperwork on the modify. At this point I'm scared to call the DMV and tell them anything. The bike runs so good & rides great. But at this point the only thing I know to do is part the bike out. Makes me sick...sick...sick but there's no way I can get the title straightened out. I'm just screwed. I can't take the chance of the bike being conficated, & then I really won't recoop any money. The 2 men that went with me feel really bad, but I'm the one out the money. I hate it when people take advantage of my good nature, & make me step out of my character! But at the end of the day it's all me! Man what a lesson to learn! Thanks everyone for all the info.
