Uh NO!!

The pennies are there to extend the spring so that you can get it on.
Once you have the new spring in place take the pennies out.

In that case you can use a right angled grinder to cut the old one off.

To install the new one bend it over till you get a gap between coils, put your pinkie in between the coils, then straighten spring. That should expand it enough.

You could get some 16 gauge sheet steel, use a jigsaw and cut a bunch of little circles about the size of a penny.
