As far as your ignition, I wonder if a DPO didn't butcher up the VOES (Damn smog stuff... I'm gonna disconnect it...") and then advance the timing to compensate for it not having the VOES in there anymore. Anyway, find out what module you have, hook up the VOES properly, and set the timing. You just use a timing light and look at the timing marks under the plug on the left side of the engine case between the cylinders. You don't have to buy the plastic plug if you don't mind some oil mist blowing out at you.

As advised before ... check your bike for aftermarket carb., etc. etc.
Let us know what you find.
