Engine Upgrade advice needed
I have a 1999 softail with an 80 Eco that has 32000 miles on it. Still runs good with no problems, but it is a second bike that I am considering making it the first bike. I have a 2009 Roadglide that I am considering selling. I like the reliability and easy start of the fuel injection on the roadglide. If I make the softail my only bike, I would like to add more power/torque, now that I have gotten used to the Roadglide. Nothing crazy, I don't want to have drivetrain issues or change out anything. Although it might be good to put a 6 speed transmission in it, if possible. Also willing to drop a new or rebuilt engine in it. Any direction would be appreciated. I have always been more interested in making them look good instead of performance, so I am just starting out in this adventure.
Usual formula is EV27 or 46 cam, upgraded inner cam bearing. A head-job (porting and comp ratio increase) and maybe an ignition set up.
Will pull like a train then :-)

Rather than put crazy money into a 6 speed you could consider just changing the sprocket on your inner primary, making all 5 of your gears taller. Dropping your all your rpm's down by 300. Making for much better hwy cruising. I did this on my 95 FLSTC and loved it.
ive got a 98 RG so ill be doin the same was used to my 09 EGC....But my bike is going to be a long term project so will prob do a baker 6speed and a reverse. and then prob a 110cu S&S motor...could be pipe dreams...lol and im upgrading the rear swing arm and wheels right now. ive got 50k miles
Mind you, you'll loose that "traffic light pull". That's the reason I went for 6 speed w/o changing the sprockets. The choice is obviously yours, but you MAY have to change the belt as well, and the price of a belt + sprocket isn't that far from $600 Ultima 6 spd gearset.
Your stock gearing is fine - don't get caught up in the chase to reduce revs in top gear, that just kills performance across the board.
Our bikes are held back by EPA regulations in several areas. The valve timing is poor, so change cam, the EV27 being probably the most popular in here. I used one for several years. The ignition timing is also compromised, so IMHO you should change the ignition module as well, to get better advance curves. Air filter and mufflers go without saying! Gearing is also higher than it should be, which is why I say leave it as is. Softails have higher gearing than the other big twins.
