My oil light flickers after a hard run when I stop. Harley manual says it is normal. I have my idle set a little lower than most also, so that may be a factor, but I have 39,000 miles on it and no problems.
Thanks, really appreciate the responses. I will have it looked at, I just bought it and it's my first Harley so im learning as I go. The idle is good around 1k, it is up for an oil change after the "break-in" from the rebuild, at least thats what the seller told me to do after 1000 miles and im just about there so I'll have it checked.
So its a rebuild , you just bought it , its your first Harley , and you will have it looked at.?
Sorry Bro. but it sounds like you have either purchased a bike from a dealer or a stealer. I would advise that you take the bike back to the seller before your 30 day government mandated warrenty has expired and have it checked out . If you are learning as you go , be advised to take no bullshit from those you meet at shops or take someone else with you who takes no bullshit from same.

Where do you see this Jim? I have never seen a HD manual say that is normal. I have the original Owners Manual and Shop Manuals that came with my bikes, which I bought new.

@ Machinehed, I bought it from a private seller with reciepts and I did take a friend who has worked for Harley in Irvine CA for a few years when I bought it. I've had it for a couple months already with zero issue till this.
Clean the tappet screen, it can and does affect oil pressure. I have cured this same problem by doing that. Also, check its a proper Evo filter but get it looked at by whoever built the motor as it shouldn't be happening.

I have the 99 Harley Softail manual, and on page 3-7 under oil pressure signal light, it says oil pressure light should go off above idle. It says oil pressure is normal if it is between 12 and 35 pounds at 2,000 RPM. It also says if pressure gets above 50 psi at any time there is a restriction somewhere. Like Spanners said tappet screen or the oil pressure relief valve can cause that among other things. The relief valve starts to open at 3 psi, and continues to raise as pressure comes up.

So the OP bought his" first harley" and it has problems,so *ucking what! EVERYONE has been there done that. Some people just floor me...I guess your not allowed to buy a harley with problems,he asked a question on what its doing, not get the 5th degree!
A "normal" HD V-Twin will have about 7lbs pressure per 1,000 RPM's. The most common cause of the oil light coming on at idle is having the idle RPM set too slow. The idle should be set around 1,000 RPM's. Next would be the engine getting too warm and thinning out the oil, followed by a worn oil pump. There are other reasons, such as worn lifter bores, bushings and bearings. Lastly a defective oil sending unit. Hope this helps.
