Hi guys,
Ive been considering getting a big bore kit and some head porting etc done to my 98 fxd. I have decided its easier and better in the long run to just drop an ss evo or ultima in, sell the old engine with 30k on it to soak up some cost.
My question is, how much else do I have to change to accomodate the new donk? Im looking at a 96" to replace the 80".
Thanks for any advice.
96" needs: Better clutch, descent exhaust and check into a better starter if the S&S has some compression, nothing worse than chucking a starter drive with a big engine and good decision on buying a engine compared to building the stocker. You sure you don't need a bigger donk than the one you are looking at?
Gday mate,
Re the bigger engine, not too sure...when looking at hot roding the stocker, they were only talking about 15 extra from mmory, I thought if I stayed close to that, I mightnt need to adjust too much else. If I need a new clutch, I would be happy to go a bigger power plant. Havimg said that, I dont ride too hard anyway.....i was looking into a new ignition kit anyway, the pipes are new, vh short shots, and I just put a new e tupe carb on. Can sell if I buy the new engine.....any other tips?
Classic! I was thinking...thats not a knife...this is a knife!
In Soviet Russia this film had liked us :-)
As for your donk swap project i suggest you to look at the engines bigger then 96 - something about Ultima 107 or S&S 111. Anyway you'll need to make at least minor clutch upgrades for your project but these upgrades will work good on engines up to first line of three digit displacements. On '98 you already have a clutch that served well until TC96 was released so for the first step you can just replace friction plates to kevlar ones and install tighter (or "heavy duty") spring in the stock clutch shell. And install an EZ-Clutch kit to reduce lever effort from heavy duty spring. This setup works fine on my Ultima 107" - no slippage and adequate lever effort to ride through the heavy city traffic.
PS. Also i would suggest you to use the oil cooler on any bigger engine of you choice.
All sage advice guys. Im ringing. Trusworthy mechanic on Monday. He sells ultima here in oz. keen to see what his thoughts are, how much labour rmove and replace donk?
