With the carb jeted right you should be able to push the enrichener all the way in after starting and lock the throttle to a good idle till it warms up. I have drag pipes and a K&N air filter with a 45 pilot jet and a 180 main on my 99 EVO. Once it is warmed up a few minutes it runs fine without hesitation or pop. Like others have said I usually wait till the rocker boxes are getting warm before riding.
i have an s&s super e. i have to open the enricher about half way...as soon as it starts i turn the enricher all the way down and give it throttle for a couple minutes...then i'm good. i fouled my plugs using the enricher too much
on cold mornings i will pull enricher, start, push in enricher right away , use throtle lock until warm. on nice mornings pull enricher , start, push on enricher and go. 98 wide glide with pipes and sceamin eagle. intake, stock carb jetted
My routine for cold starts.Enricher out, three twists of throttle and start.Same as others.Gloves on,light a smoke and push the enricher in and hand throttle til idle is smooth and I'm pretty much done my smoke. Ride easy for the first few miles.
Back with you guys...takes a "good" ten minutes for rocker box to get warm (cold idle start) when mid to upper 50's temperature outside. Then she runs PERFECT. Also, it only takes 3-5 minutes (cold start) for enricher "full in" and the idle is PERFECT. However, I can't ride at that point. If I try, the sputtering/hesitation is frequent enough to be unsafe on the road. Bottom line question....is a 10-15 minute wait sound normal? Or could something be wrong? Forgive me, I've only been an evo owner for a couple months. Thanks

No, not in my experience. I bought my 1990 bike new and although I now have an S&S engine, at no time have I waited any time for it to warm up before riding, as I mentioned at #8. Indeed I have never done so in 40 years! So something isn't right IMHO.
Do you have the original carb on it and if so have you uncovered the idle screw, so you can adjust it? It's a long time since I did mine, but as I recall it is underneath the carb. Hopefully some else can confirm.
I have S&S Supe E and start with enrichner and turn enrichner off as soon as she fires up then I proceed to twist the throttle and go. As some others have stated I see no need in letting it sit idle and have never had a problem. I just take it easy the first few miles. Quickest way to get bike up to temp is to ride the thing.
