Back with you guys...takes a "good" ten minutes for rocker box to get warm (cold idle start) when mid to upper 50's temperature outside. Then she runs PERFECT. Also, it only takes 3-5 minutes (cold start) for enricher "full in" and the idle is PERFECT. However, I can't ride at that point. If I try, the sputtering/hesitation is frequent enough to be unsafe on the road. Bottom line question....is a 10-15 minute wait sound normal? Or could something be wrong? Forgive me, I've only been an evo owner for a couple months. Thanks
Sounds about right to me (at least that is what mine does).
I give it the time because I don't want to take the chance of blowing the base gaskets from riding before the engine is warmed up.
I may be too cautious but it doesn't hurt anything to warm it all the way up before riding.
after fixing my intake leaks, i started it and it idled steady at around 1400rpms....let it do its thing for about 2-3 minutes, then slowly pressed in the choke a bit at a time.... after about 4-5 minutes choke is in and it idles at a steady 1k and she's good to go... but i'll still ease into acceleration for a good ten minutes before treating her like the bitch she is
Pretty sure original carb. Starts first time every time and normal warm-up time til enricher is full- in, about 5 minutes (perfect). But if I try to ride then, the popping and backfiring is pretty bad for another 3-5 minutes. Can't "ease into it" so to speak. I've had the bike for just a couple months and it seems like she just became tempermental like this within the last couple weeks? Would gas have anything to do with it? I've heard they just changed the ethanol in gas recently. But after the first ten minutes or so, she does runs like a dream, so I'm a little stumped?
I think these things are just cold blooded machines. My evo was pretty much like yours until I put a bigger pilot jet in. However, I still need to ride with the choke on some for a few minutes, and if I stop for 20 minutes even after a 50 mile run, it needs some feathering for a minute to keep it idling.
Could be any number of things MJ,but starting with a good tank flush and maybe a carb rebuild may help.
Got a guy near here who is a licensed HD mechanic that will pull, clean and rebuild a carb for $25 plus any parts.
On weekends he loves spring time.
