I am about to install a Andrews 27 cam in the 98 road king classic and am having a hard time finding shims for the cam. Does anyone know what assortment of shims I should get for the install and a good place to order them? My local HD shops dont carry them -
Usually you don't need them. There is one that comes with the kit to compensate for a change to the cam design and the instructions explain all this but in my experience the range of cam movement allowed usually means the shims aren't needed.
Try Ebay for shims, usually plenty about on there.
Kit? My cam came with no shim. I bought a .05 with the cam and did a test fit. The end play indicated I needed another .015 so I picked up a .065 shim from the local independent shop. I'm more comfortable in a single correct shim than stacking thin ones.
I have checked Ebay with no luck. I will order a .05, .055 and a .065 and use the one that I need. Does anyone know of another place to order these?
J&P Cycles carries shims you need, and remember to change the gasket as well. You need to measure end play with cover bolted in place, trorqued to specs and new gasket in place
Do like bumpandrun says..check the endplay BEFOR you buy anything, will save you some money. And don't forget to get all the gaskets you're going to need..
