Yes your timing could be off if your Hi4 is going to the crapper. I had a bike that had one in it and unless you have a REAL good battery it will not work. They need something like 13.8-14v when cranking and will not start with low voltage.
Don't get off track and eliminate one part at a time. If it is a run for 20 then stop it is most likely heat causing a part to overload and stop working. Use a heat gun or hair dryer on the coil then the Hi4 you should be able to replicate the problem if not your next step would be voltage drop causing the Hi4 to shut down check charging volts and watch till bike is warm and shuts down. If your lucky your bike still has the stock ECM under the left side panel and you can easily change it back to a stock ignition. IMHO cone ignitions are not a great idea due to the heat and are subject to failure due to this.

Kush - you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but, I've run "cone" ignitions in many bikes in very strenuous conditions (LSR, hot street bikes, etc) - and haven't ever experienced a failure that wouldn't have happened had the module been remote.
As with anything electronic, a heat related failure is usually the result of some microscopic piece of dust getting embedded into the carbon on a chip during its manufacture. This is why its suggested that you do a "burn in" when you get a new device.
I won't discount anyone's different experiences, but, I've done OK w/the self-contained modules.
I don't think cone ignitions are a good idea either, but I will admit that some have been working OK for people. However, the Crane Hi4's were not one of them.

Agreed. My favorite is the Daytona Twin Tek - but, the Ultima I've got in my FXRT is performing pretty reliably thus far.
so how do i tell if the crane hi4 is working? if it needs to be replaced do i replace with a programmable one similar to the hi4 or go with a standard one? single fire or dual fire, my current coil has two terminals i see some have three. im losing sleep over this dam thing, im almost to the point where i might take it in to the shop but i know we are close to finding the cure, thanks guys.

ya texas ive been reading them religiously, but i never asked or got an answer about do i need a programmable ignition module or just a standard one and the single or dual fire coil, i really appreciate the numerous replies from both you and dr.hess and im following all of your tips, thanks again.
so i looked up the crane hi4 module and its a 8-1100 dual fire so that answers my question on that, i guess i will order one, should i get just the ign module or the whole kit, is an external module an option and if so is it a better option. accel/daytona/dynatek/compufire? are any of these a red flag other than the crane?
