Default 1988 FXRS-SP Front Fork Air Control

Hi folks...

Wondering if anyone out there has a 1988 FXRS-SP, and is able to do a visual check on a part in the front fork air control system.

I've attached the diagram of the front fork air assist control system so you can see the part I'm talking about.

Here's the deal:

The previous owner dropped the bike and I noticed the air control manifold was busted, so I recently replaced it. While doing that I noticed one of the tubes that go from the manifold to the top of the forks was shorter than the other. I suspect the tip busted off inside the manifold. As a result, the air assist system is leaking and every time I hit a bump, the leak sprays a small mist of fork oil on the front of my tank. I've been looking to replace the faulty tube, and I think I've tracked down the part number (45587-88) but according to the dealership where I found the part, the tube is completely straight, whereas the one functional tube I currently have on my bike seems to have a very slight, very natural looking kink in it. To further complicate things, I've seen a similar part number listed for this part as 45587-88A and I'm wondering if maybe this version has the kink in it, or if the kink occurred when the bike was dropped.

If anyone out there has the same bike and can have a look to let me know what the tubes look like on their bike, it would be much appreciated!

Alternately, if I was to leave this as is, I'm wondering if this will continue to spray fork oil or if maybe the oil is just residual. I'd thought the air assist system would be completely independent from the hydraulic system. Am I wrong?

The tubes are $110 bucks a pop, and if it's not essential I repair them, then I'm not opposed to having a non-functional front fork air control system.

Any insight is welcome!

The important thing is to seal the whole system up and have it withstand about 30 PSI. It is not important how you get there. I don't know what the manifold you're talking about is, so I'm not sure exactly what you're talking about. Can you somehow get a hose from what you have to the tube on the top of the fork tube? And, yeah, you need to fix that.

The manifold is part 19 in the diagram that I attached to the original post. It's also aluminum and the tube I'm talking about--which is tapered on one end-- slides into it to create a seal. So, whatever goes into that manifold needs to be rigid.

The 2 fork tubes connect to the manifold, which connects to the valve, which connects to the reservoir (the crash bar). You just need to connect all that together and you'll be OK. If the tube is broken, replace it or Aggie rig it to the manifold. As long as it's all sealed up, it will work.

Some people replace the whole anti-dive thing with stiffer springs.
