Default Carb removal

Well this is a noob question, but can you remove the carb without taking the tanks off? I was reading the service manual for my 97 heritage and it said to remove the tanks to get the carb off. I watched some videos on youtube and they were able to get the carb off without taking the tanks off.

Thanks for any tips you guys may have.

Yes, you can remove the carby (hello Spanners) without removing the tank.

Yes, you can, and I have done that route in a moment of lazines. Big mistake, HUGE, everything about the job was way more difficult with the tanks left on. I'll never do that again!

As said yes you can, but what makes it a pain is the throttle cables are wire tied to the frame so you don't have a lot of room to undo the cables and you could possibly scratch the tank. If you leave the tank on make sure you loosen the cables all the way before you pull the carb. I don't know how long the carb has been on, but if the carb is hard to pull out of the intake then replace the gasket on the intake that the carb slides into.

And when putting the carb back on, be sure to use dish soap and water on the rubber gasket to make sure it has a good seal. Should always do that when changing rubber gaskets. A friend at a shop aided me in this advice when I was rebuilding the carb on our old sportser.

Its a old trucker trick too. If a glad hand is leaking, just put some windex, or even spit on it and it makes the rubber stick together. Stops the air leak.

If you don't want to remove the tanks you may be able to unbolt the back and block it up and gain some working room. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, that's the info I was looking for. I might as well take off the tanks to clean them and check everything over.

fit a decent quick disconnect fuel line fitting to the balance tube, it makes live a bit easier and less messy
