Default 98 FXDWG Wiring question

Hey Guys,

I just got my after market tachometer in.
Wiring instructions are as follows:

Red wire to ignition "on"
Blue Wire to Lamp on
Black wire groud

Green wire to negative side of coil or CDI

Well I looked under my dashboard and dont quite understand where I need to put what..

First, I dont have a blue wire, second I dont have a red wire. But most importantly, do I need to hock up the green tacho wire all the way to the coil or is one of the wires under my dashboard the right one?

Please see attache pic..

Thanks guys

//edit: Found the second pic from the wires going into the actual speedometer. I guess I can use that red and black wire. I think the very back one is a white and green wire. Thats not the negative coil wire I need, correct? (would be way to easy)

Your bike is much later than mine, so it's difficult to give advice, but on mine the white/green wire is speedo to flasher unit, as part of the flasher system.

My reading of those wires you mention is that the blue wire is for the tacho light, in other words the light inside the tacho so you can read it at night. The red wire simply provides power when the ignition is switched on, the green wire is essentially measuring the ignition pulses sent to the ignition coil, which is how the tacho measures engine speed. Black to ground is easiest!

Green wire goes to the pink wire that runs from your ign module to your coil...pick it up at either the module or the coil.

Red goes to any orange...there will be one to your fuel guage but they are all over the place, orange with a white stripe is fine too.

Black to ground and blue can also go to an orange as its just the lamp.

Stock tacho has internal wiring to the lamp so it only has an orange feed, a pink and a black.

Hey guys, thanks for the replys.

I tried it this morning in a rush (worst idea ever)

Hooked it up like this(all accoarding to the second pic I attached)

Green to pink ( top right pink wire on the clamp that connects to the speedometer)
Blue to orange/white (top left orange/white wire on the clamp that connects to the speedometer)
Black to black (bottom right wire on the clamp that connects to the speedometer)
red to the red/black ignition wire coming under the main ignition switch

Of course nothing worked. And to top it all off, I also shut down my speedometer and odometer. Wouldnt move an inch. I must have jacked up a wire or so.

Will check again on Sunday, with hopefully more time.

Spanners, as you can see in pic 1, I have 2 orange wires and two black wires in between. Should I just use these as power and lamp wires?

Hope the speedo and odo comes back up after touching a few wires and its not something else.

Oh, and I used clamp connectors. Unfortunatley they did not have t- connecters so I had to use the regular ones.

Thanks again

Orange = power, black = ground so yes, you can use them.

Don't use the red/black as it is the wrong side of the system fuses. Orange is fuse protected.

Thanks again for the reply, spanners.

I will try again after I figured out why my speedo and odo won't work anymore. Any ideas what to check first? Could I have destroyed the speed sensor or popped a fuse?

Any recommendations what the best way is to hook the wires up? The connectors I bought just seem so big and totally in the way!

Thanks and good night!

Probably blown a fuse, if it was speed sensor it would still light up so I reckon from here, that its a power feed issue, so start with fuses. soldering is the best way to connect but you could use crimps if you know how to make them work...FFS don't use those awful blue piggyback connectors with the blade in....might as well use blu-tak

The speedo still lights up tho. It just doesnt show my speed anymore. also the blinkers dont auto cancle anymore.

Yeah I tried these blue connectors and they are a pain in the butt.
How would I make the grimps work? Would have to cut the wire and the. Connect all ends again?

Don't use those blue things! As I suggested earlier call in an auto store and get some connectors that will enable you to wire things in a better way. The crimp type are fine in my experience.

I'll check out the auto store in town. The grimp type connections sound good but ill see what else they have.
