I have
The later 3 piece cranks have been known to break
Axle shafts require a higher grade of steel than flywheels
This steel is more expensive
Chances are the grade of steel used for the 3 piece crank was possibly compromised as a cost saving measure - this is only a theory maybe somebody with inside knowledge would be able to confirm this or otherwise
Anyone know the cost of a dyi evo rebuild? had it rebuilt 4 k ago but just broke the crank....
Joe, it would help us to know in what way the crank is 'broke'! If a bearing has failed you may be lucky and be able to rebuild the bottom end. If the crankshaft has suffered a fracture, the damage is likely to be much more extensive. It's difficult to answer your question and may not be possible until the engine is dismantled.

The first evos had the 5 piece "shovel" crank...somewhere around 86 they changed to the 3 piece design...and the first ones where notorious for breaking the pinion shaft...very common, even with stock HP.
