A box truck was making a right turn into a development. He went into the decel lane and started slowing down. He blocked my view of the little red Mustang coming out. The Mustang was turning left to go north, crossing the southbound lanes. I didn't see her, she didn't see me. She popped out, I locked up, tires squealed, and she froze right in my lane. I eased up on the brakes and regained traction, down shifting, doing everything I could to slow down but maintain control. I started pushing to the right to try and get behind her, but I knew I had traffic behind and on the right, so I had no where to go. I'm bearing down on that little red Mustang, about a 1968, little chrome bumper. I knew my left leg was going to get it, and I would fly in front of traffic. I was maybe 30-40 feet from her, and I was preparing for impact. I looked at her, and she looked right at me, and I just shook my head. She just lit up, slammed her accelerator, and both her rear tires put out a little puff of smoke, and I watched that little chrome bumper pass my leg less that a foot away. I shot across to the right and stopped on the should looking into the woods. I was really confused, that wasn't where I was supposed to be. I looked over my shoulder, she was stopped in the median, all traffic in the southbound lanes were stopped. I looked at the girl, and basically asked if everyone was alright back there, and she just waved them off and pointed at me, like are you ok? I looked, and still had my leg, bike was intact, and I looked at her, the path I must have taken across the road, and where she was, and just gave her a thumbs up. I got myself in first gear, glanced over my shoulder preparing to take off, and she was flat back in her seat looking up thanking God I assume. She was late twenties, and I thank her to this day for being so sharp.
Moral of the story, I never give up control of my bike. One guys first comment after telling this story was "shoulda laid it down". Sure, laid it down, @#@#ed up me and my bike. As it turned out, no one got hurt, and we all went our own way. My heart gets going every time I relive that incident. That was about 6 years ago.
There are some graybeard iron-asses that have 100k under their belts that will say laying her down is the Correct method.
Wrong!

Thumbs up

I've managed half a million without 'laying it down', whatever that means! bluharley did the right thing, but that is what a fellow blue Harley owner would expect! On the other hand, the notion of deliberately crashing is just plain......

I've always been uber defensive when riding. Even taking the offense to avoid 'situations'. Lately I've been commuting on my HD, it gets 40mpg versus the 15mpg I get driving my Blazer. And if I didn't use it to commute, it wouldn't get ridden at all.

Flashback...

I spend 5 days in hospital just north of Atlanta, GA back in 2003, when some nimrod driving a 93 Taurus decided he wanted to be in the same lane I was using on I-75. Last thing I remember was his right rear fender hitting my front wheel, and the sensation of weightlessness. Then the cops and EMTs all holding me down as I was shouting: 'Did anyone see the white Taurus? The white Ford Taurus???? He just hit me.....' I heard someone say, 'Yeah, we got him...' Last thing I muttered before going unconscious (again) was 'the s.o.b. just came over and hit me...' It was 2:45 PM, I was lucky some other motorist didn't run me over, on the afternoon escape from Atlanta.

I'm a bit sensitive when other's try to take me out...

I don't think it would matter if you were on fire. Car people try to kill bike people. Glad you're okay.

That's a hell of a story Blu, I think about that kind of stuff every day. Funny, 20-30 , yrs ago, when I was living in Ohio, the thought of colliding with another vehicle would never even enter my mind. Now I think about it everyday. The drivers down here in the Bay area, hell, all of Florida, are about as crazy as they come.

Yea, I was on Mcmullen Booth in Palm Harbor. Compared to US 19, that's a cruise in the park.

Bullshit - That's a defeatist attitude. So far, so good for me and I've been riding for 35 years. Doesn't mean I'm the best BY ANY MEANS, but whatever I'm doing, so far, so good.

1) All other drivers/riders are idiots:

2) All other drivers/riders are out to kill you &

3) You're invisible to all other drivers/riders.

Bingo. I was westbound approaching Morton Taylor, when dickweed pulls out from the apartment complex. Fox Body Mustang on my left, no bailout to the right. Like I said, I just knew he was going to pull out. And he did.
