My bike starts first time every time, choke on push button go. On short trips like to the corner store and a brief stop, the bike will make a funky grinding noise and sometimes puff out of the ac, then start up fiine the next push of the starter. NOt all the time but it does happen often. Now if I ride longer or stop longer it starts fine. What am I missing, I just cant figure this out, I think it has something to do with carb, but what? I have a 1995 evo, s&s carb, ev 13 cam, the bike runs great otherwise. thanks for any ideas. By the way it seems most of my harleys would do this every now and then,...
More likely your battery is taking its time recovering from the start. That grinding noise is typical of low voltage but it can have other causes, such as solenoid in need of an overhaul.
Long ride charges the battery fully.
Puffing out of the air cleaner can occur if the starter is labouring and it spits back on the firing stroke....like an old 500cc single BSA back in the day...only then the kickstarter would bite you in the ankle.
Obviously from half a planet away it is hard to diagnose but I would load test the battery, have a look at the solenoid and also read the sticky about adding another relay to the system as it can also solve this issue.
