Seat options
Good morning all......
I'm in the processes of converting the tour pac on my 98 touring to a quick removal system of my own design.
In the mean time I'm shopping around for a seat that will look and feel good without the rear pac on. Limited budget.
I found some possibilities on ebay but not sure if a later model seat will fit on my bike. Like a 2006. There seam to be a plethera of mid 2000 seats available. The mounting looks the same, but that doesn't mean it fits.
Will a later model seat fit my 98? What about sportster seats?
Thanks.

It's been less than hour on a Saturday when people are probably riding and if they aren't they are working or doing something with their family.
The best way to do this is look at mustang seats website and it will tell you what years are compatible with each other. Generally there is no compatibility between sportster, softail, dyna, touring, and fxr families when it comes to seats, especially the driver seat unless a person does some fabrication. You are better off getting the right seat for the bike to begin with then modify it to fit your needs.
Define what limited budget means. To some it means $100. To others it means $1,000.
Keep in mind we are talking about the main thing that will make a bike a joy to ride or a real pain in the ***. People spend thousands of dollars on modifying or replacing their engines to get every last bit of horsepower out of them but on something that is as critical as a seat they skimp on. I am not saying a seat has to be expensive. What I am saying it is worth spending TIME researching a seat for both comfort and fit.

Actually, my original post was at 8:32 this morning. About the time that everybody was most likely meeting up for their ride today. We don't always think about those things when our scooter is sittin in the garage needing attention.
Prot, Thanks for the mustang info, I'll go check it out.
I noticed your from my home state,(Pineville,LA) I was barbequing some stakes with the family when I saw your post, made me all home sick.
Anyway, Thanks for the info man.

FWIW, I am going through the process of figuring out a seat for several weeks now. I ultimately decided to keep my original seat, which I like, and will get it reupholestered with nice leather, maybe some custom touches, something like that.
Prices on the mustang seat site are very inflated. Dennis Kirk and a few other places have better pricing, sometimes less than half price, but the mustang seat site has the best way to look up fitment, part numbers, and that sort of things.
Here is my thread documenting my search for the best seat for my 95 Heritage Softail Classic.

This site has good pricing for mustang seats
http://www.motorcycleseatdealer.com
and this site is the mustang seat site:

Of course, Dennis Kirk:
https://www.denniskirk.com
Dennis Kirk does price matching on all items and shipping is free. I have had good experience with them before.

Red, I went through the same process this spring on a 91 FLHTC. I ended up with the solo mustang seat. That said, it's "fine". Not great. It looks nice when it's sitting still but it is not the seat that I would have hoped for. There's a lot of bummers about buying a seat. First is you can't put it on your bike, sit on it, and ride it around to test it out. Second is that it's a super personal choice and decision. Some people ride long rides and want a seat that is comfortable beyond belief and put the way it looks in the background. Some people want their seat to sit nice and low so their short legs can reach the ground flat footed, some like solo, some a two up. All I'm saying is you can ask 10 people what seat to buy and you'll get 8 different models recommended.
If you're looking for one that will fit your bike, go to denniskirk or jpcycles, enter your make/model/year and search for a seat. You'll get every result that is available.
I wish you the best of luck in finding the right seat. I had a solo made for my softail this year. Wanted some custom stitching and wanted it to sit super low. It looks exactly like what I wanted but it took 4000 miles for it to break in. I'm not sure if my *** broke into the seat or the seat actually broke in. Either way, it's not an exact science, that's for certain.

Well, Here's the one I bought. It's a Corbin. Ebay, 80$.
I'm just wanting it for running around locally when I pull the rear touring pac off. I'll still use the stock seat for long rides. It's soft and comfy. If it doesn't work I'll re-sale it and continue the search
Thanks for the links and info. It was very informative.
