I've been doing it for the last 80K miles. Maybe we get better filters on this side of the equator. I would not use a Fram filter. The "regular" ones are pure garbage, and I'm still pissed about that, so even if the premium ones (extra whatever) are actually usable, the fact that they were knowingly selling me garbage for years while telling me it was good just pisses me off.

Ok a little update, called the dealer and the general consensuses is the short will work but the WG calls for the long one, so it is for my sons bike that he just bought and he is going down and get the long one.
Oil filters are the only original HD part that I insist on, everything else is aftermarket.
I am with Spanner on this one, I have gone to independent shops and given the wrong filter in aftermarket.
I have done a lot of research and not found a filter that I was comfortable with. I was going to use a Pure 1 but they do not even recommend using their filters on Harleys, so good enough with me.
And any aftermarket filter that I would be comfortable with like the K@N is not cheap enough for the change.
And it gives me a good reason for my by yearly ride down to the HD dealer.
Thanks guys.

I use the short one on my 97 WG with no oil pressure problems. I change oil every 2k mi though too. I was scared of rubbing a hole thru my stator plug with the long one.
AGAIN, dont put an TC filter on a EVO.

Yea had that happen before, as a mater of fact, it was Sunday at the HD dealership and the guy was on the phone, just grab the filter and rang it up.
Mine I looked at it to make sure it was right, and his we just assumed it was correct.

There is a lot of confusion on HD oil filters. The HD listing in their book says that the Twin Cam filter is also for the 99 EVO up. They also say it is a retrofit for earlier Harleys including Shovels. I use the earlier EVO filter on my 99 though.

Funny, people will take advice from a random post on the internet about using a car/truck oil filter, but,They won't use the new synthetic media filter that is stated by HD to retrofit Evo's.Sorry ,I have been using the 5 micron filters on 2 Evo engined bikes.Guess what? They are running fine.
If you believe the MOCO would recommend a filter that will somehow damage your motor, then you probably believe a whole lot of other conspiracy theories.

If they are all "the same", why do they ask you what model and year bike you have when you buy a filter at the dealer?.,,
