ON MY 03 my guess was the crank was way out of line , The shop my bro-in-laws bike was at paid for the new engine ,bro-in-law is in another state , he said after the new engine it still ran like crap , his dealer loaned him a trailer & said to take it to another city 60 miles away & let them fix it , he did & second shop well it's still there , second shop is Santa Fe Harley Davidson in NM
Tell you one thing though....I would be rebuilding that FXR rather than buying a newer bike!!!
sound advice, drop a 93" S&S motor into it, chain drive conversion and better brakes and it would be way better than anything the factory has ever produced

Sounds like you need to ship it down to me...I will fix that sucker!! There is no excuse, any wrench with more than eight brain-cells can make a Harley run...after all...on a TC you can't get the ign timing wrong and the carby settings are in the manual...I think this guy has been wrenching on that bike..

One last question: What was the last year HD used the Evo engine?
To be pedantic Evos are still being made, in the form of the Sportsters! The very last big twins were made in 2000, overlapping with the first twincams, which were introduced in 1999.

'98 for the Glides
'99 for the Softails (I think they changed to TC's mid year)
2000 Only the FXR4 was made with an EVO motor.
