Bluharley, you're right about that! Steer away from Stealerships unless absolutely necessary. Marktruckee, I have broken down on the road several times on my build, a custom EVO. Didn't have much trouble getting it fixed, shock bolt kept breaking, borrowed a guy's press one time, pulled parts from his stock, fixed it myself and paid for the parts I used. Another time in Amarillo, they saw I was on the road for the long haul and worked me in ahead of everyone else. Was pissed at the bike at that moment and lusted for a Fatboy on the floor, but salesman was clearly uninterested in selling it to me, while I was at a complete vunerable point. Go figure, but glad I didn't do it. Had the starter go out in Farmington and was worked right in, even gave me a lift to a motel, but would not stop and let me purchase any cold beverages for while I was waiting. Had an indie do a minor thing that I just didn't want to fool with in Flagstaff, those are the best shops. They are all about what you've done to the bike and will talk to you all day if you want. I like the EVO cause I can and do work on it, but it doesn't give me too much trouble, it has it's moments, but we work them out. Wouldn't mind upgrading to a TC for the road, but will probably do another build on the EVO motor sitting in my living room.

I love EVO's. I've never had a twin cam but, all my riding buddies do. They get aggrivated when they start having issues and my old 1988 FLHTC starts up and rides off. My EVO is stock except the killer cycle carb, air cleaner and mufflers. It's not fast by motorcycle standards but, it cruzes all day on the highway loaded with two people with the stereo turned up.

My previous bike was a 1990 FLSTC that had some engine work. It was faster but, not metric fast. I loved that bike. I replaced the base gaskets in my garage in three easy days on the softail. It was a really great bike. With the Vance and Hines big shots, the hot ignition, coils, cams, S&S, it sounded freakin awesome. People were always saying how great that bike sounded. Wish I could have kept it.

The newest Harley big twin I ever intend to own is 1997. That's just me. My intention is not to bash the twin cams. It's just that I am cheap and I like to wrench on my own bikes. The EVO is user friendly for wrenching. It sounds good. It's reliable as heck. It has or can have all the power you need (it's just a matter of money). It looks good to my eye. Plus, I get a rash when I have to go to the dealership.
