Hello. I have a 98 road king with M/M fuel injection and was thinking of making some major engine improvements. I was wondering if anyone has any experience tuning one of these injection systems after modification or if I should just switch out to a carb. The bike currently has a SE Stage 2 kit and a power commander 2. I would like to get around 95 horse out of it when its all said and done. Thanks.
Also, can I bore the stock evo cylinders or must I buy new ones?
Guess I should let everyone know that I am new to Harley performance. I've worked on them for a while but only to repair/replace components. So I really don't know much about modification yet.
I'd suggest you head over to nightrider.com and look at the bike tech section and evo performance.
And define what your budget is going to be first.
The evo motor is 80" stock and great motors ( had 2, still have 1)--- but I don't know how much you'll get out of it without major mods.
My 95 bagger I left at stage 1 it's probably somewhere around 63 HP
My 88 is a cop bike with hi compression, cam and some other stuff that makes it really, really fast ( for a Harley) it peaked on the dyno at 76 hp
The stock 80" was rated at 55 HP 49 state, 45 HP CA ( emissions cam), with hi flow air cleaner and slip ons, you'd pick up 7 to 10 hp.
So you are looking at maybe running 63 horse now--- to hit your gain of 50% increase--- pricey on that motor.
There is headwork, displacement, cam etc. etc which will be determined by your budget----
---- if I were looking at that kind of expense, I'd be looking at just buying a big motor from S&S ---- they are proven and built as a package.
( you would have to check frame clearance if going with a long stroke- as the motor is taller)
I would use a Keihin CV carb though, as I do alot of riding to altitude and it self adjusts, where the S&S ( and Mikuni) don't. ( The M&M as you probably know is not very flexible-it's a matter of converting the tank to a petcock, and you'll be using some other ignition anyway)
oh and with a beefed motor you'll need a Carlini race brace which connects the motor right side to the tranny--- it'll keep you from breaking the primary cases -- which can happen on HiPo Evos.
I just so happen to have seen an ad for one today on the classifieds board
