So what are they made of and what makes them so strong?

Appears to be forged steel.

BTW... Replacing the spring is a real adventure. Ended up using a pair of vise grips to get the old one off and the new one on.

I hear the secret to changing those is to use pennies.

I was wondering about this myself...luckily, in all the years I've been riding I've never had to tow a bike but when my ignition switch was giving me fits I thought I was going to have to learn quickly....

I imagine a roll back would tow the bike on the jiffy stand with straps on the handlebars holding it down? I was afraid if the left strap was tightened too much it'd break the jiffy stand off.

Or do they tow a bike straight up?

When I tow my bike, I strap the jiffy side snug, then draw the right side down until the bike is straight.

Tried that. No go. A pair of needle nose vise grips and the old one was off, new one on in under two minutes. (Had to take a gulp of beer in between.)

To put a new spring on just loosen the bolt on the top and swing the jiffystand foreward until the spring is slack, replace it and swing the stand back to the normal position and retighten the bolt... Thats it..

Never heard of one snapping, but I have also not known anyone that mounts their bike like that either.

I was thinking about mounting a step stool to the side of it, but then I noticed one there! Getting on it is getting real painful, got to do something different, I'm not ready to give it up yet.

Would removing the tour pack or changing to a different seat help? What about lowered suspension?

Stand on a floor jack and jack it up until you are sufficiently high haha.
