Default Solo Seat installation 1990 FLHTP

ust installed a solo seat on my FLHTP using a XL Kong as a spring. As I am UK based I had to make and mend for most of the components due to the shipping costs.
I did buy a late seat from US and I had a T bar probably off a FXR, had it in the garage for years.
I mounted the Kong on the T bar with a 1" long 1 1/2" diameter aluminium spacer. The bottom I put in a small short tin can with a 1" hole drilled in it, same size as the hole in the bottom of the Kong, The tin is the right diameter (~3") to just contain the Kong. I used a CV joint bellows to cover the Kong so it looks a bit more 'mechanical' used worm drive clips top and bottom to clamp it to spacer and can. I machined a platform to sit on the frame cross member to allow the Kong (in the can) to sit flat and added a spigot that fits through the Kong bottom hole, keeps it in position but allows the T bar & Kong to be hinged up easily. The seat fits on the T bar in the normal manner.
The frame cover I made from 1mm aluminium sheet in 3 pieces tail bump, centre and nose riveted together. Covered the sheet in a thin layer of camping foam and then vinyl cover to make it look like the proper plastic cover. made the front hinge bracket out of mild steel so I could position the hinge and hence seat to suit me. I think it is a bit forward of the standard hinge location (1/2"?).
Now assembled and waiting for the rain to stop!

this sounds like a lot of work, I just used 2 3" bicycle seat springs at the rear under the t bar

these aligned with holes already in the frame cross member

seat ended up about 1/2" above frame rails and has enough movement to iron out most bumbs

Good effort..... I used the same seat on my roadking...but I didn't use springs or shocks but just bolted at the rear. I made my own t bar brackets so like you I could position it where I wanted it...it feels real nice.
