Simplest way is to phone Howard, which is what I did. We talked through the various options available in the Ohlins range and the merits of each style (emulsion/separated/remote), which gave me the info I needed to make my choice. Took almost an hour, although we did talk about a lot of other stuff as well! You could email him as an alternative - mention my name!
Agreed. I'd give him a call or drop an email.. He's a great guy.. I stopped in and talked to him when I was down there for Thanksgiving and he showed me several of his projects.. I will say that he may suggest the Penske or JRI over Ohlin now, but by all means, give him a shout and see what he can do for you!
What you do is call or write, copy and paste or say you are Spanners39 on the HDF and you are golden. You can also read some of my posts or search until you find some of these DIFFERENT posts LINKIE Or Clickie Or Click Here
Yes, they are different posts. These are for real shocks that are rebuild-able & forever shocks, you can read on my web site under that brand that this company spends as much money per shock on the technology & implantation of getting just the shock shafts slippery enough to attempt to overcome stiction than what the aforementioned shock companies ask MSRP for the price of their shocks. There is no difference basically between the least expensive shock here than that of the NASCAR shocks you see on TV. Just the added bolt/add on features are different. The shock cylinders, pistons, Teflon piston rings, and shafts (either 12mm or 14mm) are the same.
If you feel as though you may not continue riding a motorcycle within a short time than consider other brands that are cheaper. If you wish a shock that your motorcycle riding children will be both fighting over how soon they can pull your plug and who gets what when you are toes up, consider a "forever shock", one that you can take with you when you go.

For those of us overseas the Ohlins are likely to be the best bet IMHO, as they can be serviced by any Ohlins agent. I'm not sure Penske are still available and JRI (born out of Penske) don't seem to have any overseas links yet, being quite new. The reason for buying Ohlins from Howard is that he has his own recipe for the internal damping, which he has developed for the Touring bikes. Ohlins have a NZ agent and although they come over as racing specialists they will be able to service a set of Howard's shocks if and when they need them.
What about the Drag Specialties shocks...anybody got anything to say about them?
I won't be quoted on this, but I could swear I read somewhere they are made by Progressive, and re-branded to be sold at a different price point.
I have read that their quality rivals stock at the least, which isn't hard to do.
If you are just simply looking for an o.e. replacement why not buy some newer, low mileage used ones? There are tons for sale cheap, and all years of dyna glide shocks will interchange. I just got some off another forum member. 2012's w/ less than 3k on 'em, $60 bucks. Just another option.

I know the Ohlin agent here.....1100 bucks for shocks is out of my budget just now.

Any forum members got some OEM take offs? even with shipping to NZ the ones you got would be a good deal.
Next year I can go nuts with some Ohlins but still helping my daughter through college just now and a bit poor...
