I set mine last fall to the rpm specified in the manual, lower than 2500 and found when the Dyna 2000i was installed the timing was still a little off. If I would have set as you recommend I bet it would have been spot on. The correct timing has made a big difference. Setting the timing last fall helped, but getting it correct makes for a new bike. The bike starts easy, has more power, and seems smoother.

Double checked the manual this morning, says to set at idle to the double dot, 20 degrees. Seems like everyone does the single and gets the rpms past VOES.

My book say's the double dot is international timing. So single dot is what you want at 35*.

or program the 2000i curve one to max advance at 35 degrees then the way you mentioned will work perfect
I retimed it this morning by Dynatek standards just to see the difference. Mostly only 1or 2 degrees difference if that from what brother Dgyver did. Might even be slightly more advanced than I need now. Because it trys to ping when real hot out the hole. I went to next bigger intermediate jet [295] to tame it.
If not Ill have to retard 1-2*. Other than out the hole, no ping and it aint never ran better. Quick, Quick...

I painted the dot. Been at it for 30 minutes. Can't get it. What a project. I know this is suppose to be easy and I can't find the dot when it's running

Well. I gave up. I tried timing it to where or was marked, no good, retarded it a little and ran like **** so went back a little. Couldn't see it advanced a little more and it ran better still couldn't see dot. A little more and ran out of adjustment it's advanced as far as it will go now, but it's also running better at idle and holding at 2500 rpms when trying to see the dot, I still can't see the damn thing so I don't know what the plan is now. It's a snap on timing light with adjustments from 0 to 60 and I turned it all the way down. Snapon mt241a

OK. Set it back to the original setting. Turn clockwise 16th of an inch at a time [2* or 2 hairs] until it comes up in the window. Very small movement and it will go out of the window completely. You have to snug the screw dn each time to grd the ignition or it wont work. I did mine by myself several times here lately, its not hard to see the dot when its in the window. about 1800 rpm works fine. I also use a big fan on high set right up on the engine to cool it when running.

Double dot is CA and places like Switzerland that have very strict emission and noise laws...single dot is the only one to use in the real world.
