I see nothing, oil and moving flywheel! Thinking about buying some neon or bright paint. I even tried slowly turning the dial on the timing light to try and catch a mark somewhere both at high rpms and idle of 1000 rpms, no good nothing.

If the timing is nearly right you can usually see the 2 dots at idle and they move to your right as the revs rise and then the 1 dot will come in to view from your left.
Aim the strobe slightly to the right of the hole and the dots will be easier to see. If you see a line then you are seeing the TDC mark and your are way retarded (just like TD).
Start the proceedings with the backplate mounting screws in the centre of the slot. The ign cup runs anti clockwise at half engine speed so every adjustment you make on the backplate is amplified x 2 at the flywheel.
So with the plate moved to max advance I'm way off. Not even close. I only moved it 4 lines from where it was set when I bought it. It still runs great. Beginning to think everything is wrong with this damn bike, everything I go to fix turns into a project. I've never owned anything that following the manual doesn't work on

Have you rotated the motor by hand to check the marks do exist?
Yes. I didn't at first I tried to find them then when I didn't see it I pulled the plugs and put some paint on the single mark. You're saying I should have my plate centered between either end of the adjustments?

Usually you do that but if you made a mark when you pulled it apart then use that.
