I've had my 96 FI Road King for almost a year and love It. Recently the bike is starting to backfire on decelleration. The previous owner put after market pipes on it with out remapping the FI sytstem. The bike is running a bit rich as well. What am I looking at to fix this?
With aftermarket pipes and no remapping, have you checked/cleaned the air filter. That would richen things up even more on you if it needed cleaning/replacing.
The bike has a stock air filter that was replaced 2500 miles ago and I replaced the spark plugs about 1500 miles ago, TheplugsI removedshowednormal wear.
I've heard that this problem of backfiringis not uncommon but I have not heard of a solution. What do you think of putting the original pipes?
I have a 98 stage II, and it backfired and popped a lot on decel. Had it remapped by the local HD shop. I don't have a power commander on it. They got rid of the popping, it almost never does it anymore. Better initial throttle modulation. If you've got a good local dealer, one with some whiskers on the Marelli EFI, they can fix it.
I am currently in the process of finding a truly grizzled EVO mechanic. The wrenchs at the local dealerships seem young and eager but I would hate towind up paying for their Evolution education with $ 90.00 an hour labour rates. Any one know of one in the Orlando, FL area?
you got to get rid of the rear cross over and make it a two in to two system. The way the left side pipe ties in it creates a vacuum and pulls cold air up to the head when letting off the throttle. The cold air explodes and creates the backfire. To test this theory, hold a dollar bill right behind the left side pipe. Rev the engine then let off. Hold on to that dollar tight as it may get sucked into the pipe. You will definaetly see the left side sucks in and does not push out.
My backfiring problems went away completely when I switched to drag pipes. Put a 1.4 inch screw whrew them about 1 inch from the exit for backpressure. Runs great and gets around 50 mpg
theres two screws top center of throttlebody. dig sealant out and adjust simaler to airfuel screws on carb, in for rich out for lean, will fix popping.also check for exhaust leaks especially rear splitter
Change out your crappy 7MM spark plug wires for a set of 8.5mm wires and set your plug gap at .40 and your good to go.
I have the same bike and had the same thing going on till I tried this.
