I have been having a problem for a couple weeks now that is getting a little worse. I have a 2003 FLHTI that is almost stalling at times. It starts to bog out and crackle like lack of fuel or possibly spark. My time as an automobile tech makes me think fuel though. I can tell when it is going to happen because the idle bumps up to about 1500 rpm at light or at idle anywhere, then it won't get out of it's own way. Then I rev the motor a couple times and it will go away. Do I have a fuel blockage possibly? I have 20k miles on the bike and don't see anything in the tank, but have never changed the fuel filter though. I thought it was happening more when the gas was sloshing so I drained all the fuel and put some fresh hi-test and it started happening again right after.
Any ideas would be appreciated! I do have pipes, air cleaner and PC3 installed...but this is new. Is it possible that the map is loading up the plugs at times? They look fine when I pulled them out and unless the idle revs to 1500 rpm's the bike runs very strong?? Could I be having a Power commander failure?? I don't really know how to rule out the PC because I don't have the original pipes or air filter to put back on so the bike would be WAY too lean if I take out the PC??????????????????
Stumped
if you had the stage 1 download done then with the free flowing pipes and air cleaner it would not be running to lean if you removed the pcIII. there may be an issue with the fuel pump. has the bike thrown any codes? there may be a fuel pickup tube that is giving you issues, however i am not familiar with how the 03's work. hope you get her figured out. they can plug into the port at harley with their diagnostics tool, or just talk with the guys at the harley service dept. they've surely had experience with the issues you've mentioned.
remove the PC and see if the problem goes away. It want hurt to run for a few miles like this. I would also check to see if it the bike has thrown any diagnostic codes. You can search the forum for instructions if you don't know how to retrieve the codes.
