Default 1981 Wide Glide

Bought an 81 wide glide that's sat since 07. Did a search on net on how to change oil on a Shovel Head and the only thing I could find was to drain tank and add 4 qts. I drained the tank cleaned it and added 3 qts ran it and it's way over full on the dipstick. Did I missed a plug or receive bad information?

All responses will be appreciated.

You probably didn't run it before you changed the oil. They have a tendency to bleed oil out of the tank and into the crankcase. If you run it for a bit before you change the oil it will scavenge the oil from the crankcase back into the oil tank. After draining put three qts in fire it up and check it.

Default non vented Gas Tank

The bike I bought has an non vented gas tank with 2 21/4 flush mount caps they're not screw in so I can't find replacements for lack of better description they look like similar to a clover leaf that drops into a bung.

Can a person drill a small hole under the flip up latches to vent the tank halves?

Welcome to the Forum, acpartsman, that's a cool old ride you've got. Nothing beats the sound of a shovel. One caveat, this is the Evo forum, your welcome here as far as we're concerned, pull up a chair, kick back and open a beer! The guys here are some of the very best in the Forum, always willing to help!

But the moderators may have a different idea. Don't be surprised if they move your shovel posts......

Well, the '81 was better than the '79 (worst of the worst.) 79 FLH was 4 quarts with the filter cartridge in the tank. What is "way over full on the dipstick?" That would be about out the top of the tank, if I recall. Oil also goes through the primary, but I doubt a quart is hiding in there. If that's a factory gas tank, I wouldn't be drilling holes in the cap. I'd leave it as the MoCo put it there. What problems are you having with the gas tank?
