True!

They are part of what could prove to be a complicated and darned expensive front end upgrade. The kit is waiting patiently while I work out what to do to the brakes. There's no point rebuilding my CCE forks with their longer tubes, if I finally decide to change sliders, for example. If I hang around long enough I might be able to afford even more expense - er - better brakes.......

The starter's flag has dropped - I've landed a bare 2010 SG wheel, courtesy US Ebay. Anyone happen to know if the later wheels will take 1" bearings, as an alternative to 25mm? I ask because there are 1" axle sets available, but no 25mm at present. Watching calipers now!

I converted my '06(might have been '08) SG wheels to 1".. All I had to do was beat the 25mm's out and press the 1" kit in.. I neglected to shim them though and the spacer is a bit loose on the rear wheel.. I'm not happy with it and think that may be the cause of my belt tension losening.. Just be sure to press the inner and outer race as an assembly so it doesnt come out or preload, I chilled mine in the freezer too.. Either way, yes, it is doable.. Also, I would be sure to peruse the classifieds on here, thats where I got my calipers, fair price too... By the way, I dont recall if it was you or Howard who told me this, but the 1" uses a double roller which provides more surface area and longevity..

Greg, thanks - and it is true the 1" bearings are twin row, another reason for wanting to use them. I've got a bearing tool somewhere and they wheel doesn't have any, so at least getting them out has been done for me! I'll know by breakfast tomorrow if I've been successful with a nice pair of Brembos on Ebay.....

Graham, look at the sticky in Wheels and Tires, I think you even posted in it in '12,
anyway, all the info you'll need there. Look at post #107 for spacer sizes, I ended up with .790 on the left to get the caliper spaced about perfect.

When I decided to go to the newer wheels, I went ahead and bought this less expensive bearing removal/installer tool off of Ebay, works great.

I went with a '09 SG 17" front wheel, and also went with the 1" bearings because of the double row, and the many threads I've read on the more common failures of the 25mm bearings.

Greg, thanks - and it is true the 1" bearings are twin row, another reason for wanting to use them. The vendor has swapped 'my' wheel, which apparently has a mark on it, for a nicer one with 25mm bearings. 1" axle purchased, but still on the case for a decent pair of Brembos. That will make up 'phase 1' for some trial fitting!

Hi Schex3x, it's embarrassing to come across my own old posts on a 'new' subject! Thanks for that, I have some homework to do, now I've decided to follow this through.

It's proved as cheap and easy to buy take-off fork lowers, instead of caliper adapters, so that is what I've now bought, as well as a pair of brand new take-off Brembos. Wheels and axle already despatched! Now, can I really afford a pair of those fabulous Lyndall composite rotors.........

Wheels and axle have arrived, both in excellent condition, so very well pleased so far. Anyone know which side the valve goes on an SG front wheel? It's slightly offset.
