While I have braggin' rights with my current front brakes, of 13" floating rotors and 6-pot calipers, the darned things have a short service life and are costing me a fortune to keep fettled. I have replaced my original rear brakes with later spec and have a recent Brembo sitting on the bench waiting to go in, the detachable caliper variety. The reason I bought it is my Deuce rear wheel, which shrouds the caliper and makes removing/refitting the wheel a complete PITA, with a one-piece caliper.
So with one Brembo to hand, plus iffy front brakes, I have turned my thoughts to front Brembos. That is a very appealing idea, however it does come with some baggage, not least my front wheel driven speedo.
Does anyone have any experience of installing recent Brembos on an older Evo?
I did a 1987 Sporty with Brembos and adapter plates, The speedo cable routing was critical but I ended up following the contour of the caliper with the cable and it worked just fine on the second attempt...its a tight fit though.
I already bought all of the stuff to upgrade to the 2006+ moco Brembo brakes. I have yet to begin the project because the weather has been great. I got the caliper brackets from Fab Kevin.
Jasper86 has completed this but he cheated, he got some 2001+ swapmeet lowers that were take offs from the stealership. I think he paid pennies for them then had them powdercoated black to match his front end, came out awesome.
Schex3x did this and you gotta search his thread because he went with the 2001+ route but he machined his speedo drive so that may be of particular insert to you.
Just started on it tonite. Used 09 lower legs. 25 mm axle. Taper on one end is same as 1 inch axle. Other end is 1 inch. Center of axle turned down slightly to 25 mm from 1 inch Only did 25 as I have new set of bearing out of the 2013 SG wheel I have on there now Looks like center up front wheel with spacers. Than pull left spacer out. Mark axle the length of spacer. Turn down axle to fit speedo drive. Cable looks a little tight but will work. Not done yet. Just have to figure the master next
Yea, really not much to it Graham.. Check out my Snowball thread.. Front axle starts on the 5th post... 5k mi and counting.. Flawless and impressive....
Thanks to Greg and Tom and all for the comments. I particularly like "really not much to it"! I haven't made much headway with the ole lady recently, not least because I keep agonising over sorting out the chassis including brakes. I like the idea of an SG front wheel, which should go well with my Deuce rear and have you seen those truly wonderful Lyndall composite rotors?! Irresistible. See what I mean - scope creep in motion.....
So it looks doable after all, I just have to decide on how far to go and when to stop harvesting stuff.
