I'm just getting to know my FXR. It wants some choke from a cold start...cold being relative since I've only had it a week or so and its July and all. So in the morning I pull the choke (which I understand is properly called an "enricher" with this carb, but the handle says "choke", so "choke" it is), fire it up, and give it a smidge of throttle so it will idle as I back it out of the garage. I'm rolling after maybe 30 seconds. By the time I hit the second stop sign (three blocks), it will idle on its own. By the time I hit the first stop light (mile and a half) its warm enough, and the choke handle has retracted on its own. Till then, I ride slower than my granddad. After its warm, I let it fly.

I pull the choke to start, turn it off, and then set the throttle above 1k rpm and below 2k RPM, and go until the head feels warm and then go ride. Takes about 2 minutes or so.

Maybe one of the circuits in your carb are set too rich. Also, slightly tighten the round plastic nut on choke bracket ,this will keep choke cable from retracting-go easy it is plastic.

Should have said.....I do push the choke in after maybe a minute...get her as slow as I can without stalling, then go back in the house and get ready. Enricher isn't all the way out that whole time. I'm only asking because 99% of the time absolutely no issues with normal operating procedure. But this last time was horrible....5 miles down the road and she's running so bad I have to pull over, or get run over....and the only thing i can think of is the long idle time.

One thing I've discovered about these bikes, is they are all unique. Ya gotta do what makes your bike happy. Cold start for mine is enrichener full out, crank, push enrichener in until bike is a 1000 rpms, let it idle ajusting enrichener in to maintain 1000 rpms. During this time I'm getting all my crap strapped to the rack and my riding crap on. When I'm all suited up (2-3 minutes), I roll out of the subdivision at 1500-2000 rpms with the enrichener fully in. By the time I get to the first traffic signal (1/2 mile), it's good to go.

If you have an OEM manual, The MoCo suggested starting and riding with the enrichener on. They knew the stock carb jetting was set too lean, but the EPA mandated it.

I can see absolutely nothing, in warming it up for a long time, that has any effect on it once you pull out and are using the throttle to run down the highway.. Not like there are excess gases hiding in the corners or something..

You might try going thru the carb and cleaning it out really well and replacing all the intake gaskets and see if that helps. Long idling won't make it run bad 5 miles down the road though.. Wouldn't be any parades at all.. LOL..

If your carb is jetted right it should idle with the throttle lock and the enrichner pushed clear in. It just might be that you are fouling the plugs and it runs rough until they get cleaned out. Try pushing the enrichner clear in after starting and lock the throttle to hold a good idle till she warms up.

Start it, set the idle speed with the throttle and lock it, " choke " off, works for me. Your just fouling the plugs up with a lot of " choke " which is just dumping fuel in the cylinders....IMHO of course.

Sorry....I should have read through all the posts before I posted.
