I don't have a tac but I would guess mine is set maybe around 800. It will probably die if its not warmed up good. Or you can idle it up and lock the throttle until it does warm up. Once mine is warmed up good it will do a very slow potato almost sounding like it is going to die but it just keeps rurnning. Probably takes a short ride of maybe a mile before it won't die when I turn off the VOES.
Hey Blackflst; Don't know what year yours is so not sure if this will be the same. On my 99 there is a violet/white that goes from the VOES to #6 on the ignition modiule plug. I just cut that wire and wired a single pole single throw switch to those two wires and mounted it on a homemade bracket that is bolted on with my horn. It is mounted just in front of the horn so I do have to reach down to operate it, but that is no problem. Makes an EVO sound just like a Knuckle at idle. That violet/white wire is in the wiring harness under the seat on the left side of the frame on mine.
I just installed the potato switch and it works like you said it would. I actually had to turn the throttle screw in for more rpm so it would idle. i have no tach so i turned it up till it would idle and then a little more. thanks for the info, been chasing the potato since I got the evo. I dont know if I like the location I chose for the switch. I put it in the hole in my dash for the electronic odometer reset, witch I dont have.(Its on the left side of the dash.)

Hey; Thats a pretty good place for the switch. I thought about trying to work it out on the handle bar switches but could not come up with any thing. I also thought about puting a micro switch on the carb throttle linkage so that it would cut the VOES at idle. But, it works OK where it is. As far as having to set your idle up I would guess that it all depends on how much the VOES retards the ignition on different modules. Glad you got it worked out.
