I just flew out to Detroit and bought an early '84 FXRT with a final drive chain, which I then rode back to Maryland's Eastern Shore. Everything went well but I still thought it was better if my indie went through the whole thing. It is 30 years old, after all.
While he's poking around in there, I got to wondering if it's possible to get parts for an '85 FXR to convert to a final drive belt? Seems like it should simple - couple of sprockets and a belt - no big deal but every now and then, life isn't like that. Do any of you all know if this can be done?
One of the reasons I bought this one is that it is completely stock with the original fairing, panniers, top box and chain enclosure (etc.). If I can do the conversion, I will retain the original parts with the bike for posterity.

Thanks
it can be done if you can still get the kit its a 1" belt. or 1.5" belt you need to change the inner primary and transmission main shaft to the longer one to give you clearance for the belt and you wont be able to use the chain guard. I think you should leave it all stock thats the only way to keep any value on Harleys ugly duckling.
Converting to an `85 type belt configuration would require more than a couple of sprockets...
The inner and outer primary covers would need to be changed, also the transmission mainshaft and the clutch assembly.
Those parts would cost quite a bit, and some primary covers are scarce.
Plus the cost of a new belt and sprockets...
If it were mine, I would enjoy if for what it is.
Supermax makes a bolt on kit that does not require you to change any of the above...only clearancing the stock parts...not exactly cheap...if you were an avid ebay shopper, you could probably do it with stock parts for about the same price.
