Default Smoking Evo

I have a 98 fxdl thats smoking from the rear cylinder. I noticed oil residue in the rear exhaust port when I had the exhaust off so I guess the valve seals need to be replaced. My question is, is it possible to replace the valve seals with the heads still on the engine? If so how difficult is it and is there any special tools needed? The bike has 38,000 miles and otherwise runs great. Or....would I be better of to pull the heads and get them both done, I'm not really ready for that, but if that what it takes I'll go that route. Thanks guys for any advice you could offer.

You would need a very small spring compressor in order to get the spring off the head while on the bike. I do not think it could be done. I'd pull them both for some r&r.

Is it possible? Have you seen how close the head is to the frame? The valve is almost plumb centre under the frame centre-line. Off with it's head, I'm afraid! Do both of 'em.

It would take some very small hands (I am talking MICRO hands) or magic of a wizard, to take on that project without removing the head(s) , there just isn't any room to work, to compress the valve springs with the tool,

Also, Personally, I have always been one of those men to repair both of one thing if their of the same function, ie, getting inside both heads at once.. I know it isn't a pleasure to begin what amounts to the beginnings of a complete teardown-- But if ye work a little spot now you are almost certainly promised a bit of riding fun later on--

But, I am a newbie so, Please, don't listen to any of me babblings or ye very well might bugger it up worse than in the beginning and to a place where that little oily smoke might be the least of ye worries.. But also, remember a blind monkey can do this job as he scratches his *** and flicks peanuts..

You'll be scooting about in no time..

If you've got it down that far, it's only 4 more bolts and a gasket. I mean, this is a one day downtime, behind the motel job. What's the big deal?

Im thinking you have more than leaky valve stem seals.
Dont know how hard those 38,000 miles were or if the engine was maintained properly etc.
Leaky valve stem seals usually show a big puff of oil smoke when the engine is first started and warming up , the smoke then dies down as the engine burns off the accumulated oil in the affected cylinder .
If you say you can see oil residue in the exhaust port " after a standard run " and if it smokes constantly ., you are in need of top end rebuild.

The good news is that pulling heads/cylinders on an EVO is no big deal. The only special tool you need is a good torque wrench, which ain't all that special.
