Found a project for the right price, yeah I got bored. Its a 1985 FXWG got screaming eagle heads, someone tried building an FL bobber of some type out of it, with the Fatboy wheels and front end. Just looking at it trying to decide what I want to build, I may just rebuild it back to a wide glide. Well see.
Looks like a fun one...IMO start with getting the mechanicals squared away while shopping (looking for deals on parts) for cosmetics. Good luck with it.
Projects are fun. The falling prices of bikes makes it interesting.. sure we can buy cheap. But after our blood sweat money and tears an all original really nice low mile one can be had for $5,000 pretty easy. Meaning if we try to not be upside down in them and even break even, we can’t put a lot into them. Say you bought it for $2,000. It means all in with new fluids and tires you’d want to only put about $2500 into it. Heck.. just tires, fluids and paint has you at that without changing tin or front ends.
Or, it doesn’t matter, we buy them to keep, love and enjoy and we just do whatever we want.

Looks like a fun project. I am kinda digging the rear fender, but that dash panel on the gas tank would have to go. It looks like it rides pretty high on top of the tank.

I already pulled the tanks and the rear fender, the 6 gallon tanks are ugly my opinion of course. These items will be going up for sale Id like to put a set of 4.2 or even 5 gallon fatbobs on. I have a 2005 FXST front end Ill probably mock up see how it looks.

That is the truth. The one I am building I could have bought at least two nice condition EVO's or TC's for what I will have it. But, I enjoy the process so it is ok for me. I will say that if I decide to do another I am just gonna buy whole bikes for the major parts I need and then sell the rest of the parts. It's crazy that you can buy a good running EVO for about $3500 and then sell the titled frame for $1000, motor for $1500, tranny for $500, and so on. I guess that's why there are a decent number of folks on ebay buying whole bikes and parting them out.

@cwhite6
You sure about getting that for parts? Here I see low mile advertised complete running EVO engines for sale for months and months.. I’ve seen them get as low as $500 for a good low mile running stock evo motor. I’m starting to see 5 speed trannys at $250 and they’re not selling.

The couple of resellers I have watched for months have sold EVO's for between $1000 and $2500. The $2500 one has big bore cases and SE heads. Now, I am in a rural area with no shops here and very little FB marketplace stuff. So I have to buy most stuff online. I am sure where there is a good bit more competition in an area with a lot of parts for sale that the motors and such are cheaper. I am just quoting what I have seen sell. I paid $570 including shipping for a 5 speed from a 1998 fat boy with 1400 miles. I am very happy with that price.
If any of you guys followed along as I rebuilt my 1998 Heritage, including the buy cost which was $5 grand then the unfortunate fire just three weeks later causing me to spend over $10+ grand more. Is it worth $16-17,000 no way, but I wanted it. I could’ve bought a really nice shape 90s heritage for about $5-6000 and I thought about it as I was buried into the rebuild, but at the end of the day I enjoyed the rebuilding process.
It’s not easy trying to flip old Harleys because the resale is terrible. If I tried selling my 2014 Street Glide Special id probably have to part with it under $10 grand, market place in my area has probably 100+ street glides and road glides for sale and the only ones that sell for good money are the 114 M8s because everyone wants the big motors.
I see Evo motors on MP usually around $1200, Softail 5 speeds $2-500, there is an individual on MP right now with two brand new 1999 Evo Softail transmissions still in the HD packaging he’s asking $1000 OBO for each, they’ve been listed for at least 8 months already.
