This one is new to me, and personally I think it is total B.S., but want to see if anyone else has ever heard of this.
Went to a local Harley dealer this evening to buy a Screamin Eagle ignition module for a 1200 sportster. I called before hand and they said they had one left. Upon arriving he said he checked with a service tech and it would fit on my bike. I paid for it and said I was installing it in the parking lot to make sure it worked. The parts guy said he was going to check one more time to make sure it was compatible.
When he came back he said that the service tech said that the bike would need to be hooked up to the computer because ignition modules had a password attached to them, and if I installed this one it would not work? WTF, he never mentioned this before I drove 15 miles to purchase it. I relented and said fine, just do it now to which he replied that they were closing and I would have to come back later. Again, WTF?
Has anyone every heard of a password on ignition modules? To me it sounds like a scam and a way to try to milk more money. Am I wrong?
Is your Sporty newer than a 04? If so the modual has to be programed...all the Moduals are the same so they go in and program it for your bike.....takes all of 10 min.
