This one is new to me, and personally I think it is total B.S., but want to see if anyone else has ever heard of this.
Went to a local Harley dealer this evening to buy a Screamin Eagle ignition module for a 1200 sportster. I called before hand and they said they had one left. Upon arriving he said he checked with a service tech and it would fit on my bike. I paid for it and said I was installing it in the parking lot to make sure it worked. The parts guy said he was going to check one more time to make sure it was compatible.
When he came back he said that the service tech said that the bike would need to be hooked up to the computer because ignition modules had a password attached to them, and if I installed this one it would not work? WTF, he never mentioned this before I drove 15 miles to purchase it. I relented and said fine, just do it now to which he replied that they were closing and I would have to come back later. Again, WTF?
Has anyone every heard of a password on ignition modules? To me it sounds like a scam and a way to try to milk more money. Am I wrong?
Non efi bikes use factory preset advance curves built into the module , they are plug and play . Unless this is some new programmable module I haven't heard about..The password is "Bend over"
Someone posted in another thread that it is in fact true that 04 and above do need to be programmed. I am calling two other Harley dealers tomorrow and see what they say.
Does it mean the ignition module will cut off at 7,000rpm if you don't have the password? You might as well keep the stock one then lol.
You should consult a few more Harley dealers to verify this.
It is true for the 04 and above. The password learn fetaure can be done without the HD digital tech computer. The procedure takes 25 minutes in total and is repeated 3 times. That syncs the passwords in the ICM and the TSM. I have seen theprocedure is posted and it is in the electrical diag manual. You will need a battery charger.
