Hope this is a simple question I have a rk-3909 stage one filter kit and a set of SE slip ons. I can install at home but can I drive my bagger to the dealer for the stage 1 DL (about 5 miles from my house) without damaging the engine?
Dealer says I may run to lean and cause damage but he can install all for $700.00.
$700 to install a filter kit and slipons seems insane. Instead of the stage 1 download, get an after market fuel management system like the PCIII or SERT and do it your self.
From what I've read, the ECM should be able to compensate for the added airflow at idle and cruise. It's at WOT where you'd be really lean. As the computer just goes to a preset fuel map for WOT.
The dealer and statement "well you know you may damage your engine" crap kinda rattled me I think its ok and I have no plans on WOTing it. The folks here have A LOT of good input, if I get a definate NO don't drive it then I will have to make other plans.
Freakin dealerships...they'll do/say whatever it takes to seperate you & your $$. Next thing they're apt to tell you is that your warranty 'may be effected' if you do the installation yourself. Fukem.
I can say for every bike, but I installed those myself then drove to my dealership....about 35 miles, and I had no problem. actually, my dealer told me"yeah bring 'er in when you get done and we will do the download for ya". I will suggest though that you look into a PCII or SERT or something, I ended up using a PCIII anyway myself and Im happy with it.
Good luck!
Do the pipe/ACinstallation yourself & go ahead & get a Power Commander now instead of after you've given the dealership $200 of your money & realize your AFR is still lean.
I did the installs and took it to my dealer had them do the stage 1 DL and the f%cking thing is still lean and pops and farts. OF course there in no warranty on DL from HD. SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN A PC!!!!!
