I have a 2003 Road King Classic I bought new, and now has 27000 miles. I have developed a tap or knock noise from the front of the engine. It sounds like a tappet or loose rod. It’s not notisable at idle but is distinctive under load and gets worse after the oil gets hot. I took it to two dealerships and was told that it was the cam chain tensioners, but after removing the cam plate everything seems normal. I’m at a loss to figure this one out.
Did you look at both tensioners? 03 had a problem wth the compensator nut loosing up which will give you a GOOD and LOUD knock as the flywheels are aloud to move more freely sid to side in the crankcase.
If it was a cam chain tensioner and a comp nut I'd think it would make the noiseall the time, so it's possibe it is a lifter tapping.
While I had it apart, I would have put in new lifters. They are cheap. You can get HD lifters for about 120 bucks a set or use Chevy small block lifters. I use the later. If you need it, the part number for Crane is 10530. I bought 16 for 199 shipped, put 4 in my bike and sold the other 12 to guys doing builds for 50 bucks per 4, so I ended up with 50 bucks in my lifters.
